Our Modus Operandi

Throughout his career, Duke Ellington embraced and practiced the phrase “beyond category” as a liberating principle of creating music beyond the constraints of genre. He worked from a place, similar to the Voltairian notion of “perfect is the enemy of good”,  as an openness and willingness to turn what is present with insistence into theatrical and expressional device.

We take our cue from the Duke and his liberating and embracing modus operandi. We take our name from his first composition The Sodafountain Rag – And from our minds’ striking resemblance to the sparkling nature of soda! We call ourselves Jerks.

The process of carbonation is what causes water to become effervescent. It was invented by Joseph Priestley whom, in 1767, discovered a method of infusing water with carbon dioxide. He wrote of the “peculiar satisfaction” he found in drinking it, and referred to his invention of soda water as being his “happiest” discovery.
